RJ Balaji, born R. Balaji on June 20, 1985, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is a popular Indian actor, director, screenwriter, radio jockey, and political commentator who works primarily in Tamil cinema. He is known for his sharp wit, social awareness, and ability to blend comedy with meaningful social commentary.
Balaji began his career as a radio jockey at Radio City 91.1 FM, where his popular show “Cross Talk” became one of the most-listened-to Tamil radio programs. His witty prank calls and satirical take on social and political issues earned him a massive following. He transitioned to cinema with supporting roles and comedy tracks in films like “Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru” (2013), “Naanum Rowdy Dhaan” (2015), and “Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal” (2022).
As a lead actor and filmmaker, Balaji has been equally successful. He wrote and starred in “LKG” (2019), a political satire that was both a commercial hit and a conversation starter. He directed, wrote, and starred in “Mookuthi Amman” (2020) with Nayanthara, which tackled the theme of superstition, and “Veetla Vishesham” (2022). He has won the Ananda Vikatan Award and continues to be one of Tamil cinema’s most relevant and socially conscious filmmakers.
