Biography
Sathyaraj, born Rangaraj Subbaiah on October 3, 1954, in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, is a veteran Indian actor who has appeared in over 250 films, predominantly in Tamil cinema. Known for his versatility, he has excelled in lead roles, villain roles, and character parts across a career spanning more than four decades.
Sathyaraj entered the film industry in the late 1970s and initially gained recognition playing antagonist roles. He rose to leading man status with commercially successful films like “Amaidhi Padai” (1994), “Nadigan” (1990), “Periya Marudhu” (1994), and “Nadodi Thendral” (1992). His roles in socially conscious films earned him both critical acclaim and a massive fan following.
He gained pan-Indian and international recognition for his portrayal of Kattappa in the “Baahubali” franchise (2015, 2017), directed by S.S. Rajamouli, which became one of the highest-grossing Indian film series ever. The character’s iconic moment and Sathyaraj’s powerful performance made “Kattappa” a household name. His son Sibiraj is also a Tamil film actor. Sathyaraj has won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor and continues to be an active and respected presence in Tamil cinema with recent films like “Petta” (2019) and “Doctor” (2021).
