Biography
Shreya Ghoshal, born on March 12, 1984, in Berhampore, Murshidabad, West Bengal, is one of India’s most acclaimed and versatile playback singers. She is recognized for her melodious voice, wide vocal range, and ability to sing in multiple languages including Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, and Nepali.
Shreya gained national attention by winning the television singing competition “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” in 2000. Her playback singing career began with the Hindi film “Devdas” (2002), where her song “Bairi Piya” won her the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer and the Filmfare Award at just 18 years old. She has since become one of Bollywood’s most prolific and decorated singers.
In Tamil cinema, Shreya has recorded numerous beloved songs, collaborating with composers like A.R. Rahman, Harris Jayaraj, and D. Imman. Her popular Tamil songs include “Munbe Vaa” from “Sillunu Oru Kaadhal” (2006), “Ennai Konjam” from “Kaakha Kaakha” (2003), “Azhagiya Theeye” from “Minnale” (2001), and “Un Mela” from “Anniyan” (2005). Shreya has won four National Film Awards, multiple Filmfare Awards across languages, and numerous state awards. She is also known for her live concert performances worldwide and has been honoured with the Padma Shri (2023).
