Biography

Urvashi, born Kavitha Ranjini on January 25, 1970, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a celebrated Indian actress known for her exceptional work in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu cinema. With a career spanning over four decades and more than 400 films, she is one of the most versatile and decorated actresses in South Indian cinema.

Urvashi began her career as a child artist in the Malayalam film “Munnettam” (1981) and transitioned to lead roles in her teens. She became one of Malayalam cinema’s top heroines in the late 1980s and 1990s, starring alongside Mohanlal, Mammootty, and other leading actors. In Tamil cinema, she has been a familiar face in both comedy and dramatic roles.

Some of her notable Tamil film appearances include “Kadhalan” (1994), “Avvai Shanmugi” (1996) where her comedy scenes with Meena and Kamal Haasan are iconic, and “Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi” (2006). She has won two National Film Awards for Best Actress, the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress multiple times, and has been recognised for her comedy performances as well. Urvashi’s ability to deliver both powerhouse dramatic performances and hilarious comedy makes her a truly unique talent. She continues to appear in films and web series, most recently gaining fresh acclaim for her work in Malayalam cinema.
