Vikram

Kennedy John Victor, known by his stage name Vikram and fondly called “Chiyaan” by fans, is one of the most acclaimed and versatile actors in Indian cinema. Born on April 17, 1966, in Paramakudi, Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu, he harboured a singular ambition from his school days — to become an actor.

Vikram made his debut in the 1990 film “En Kadhal Kanmani” and spent much of the early 1990s in supporting and lesser-known roles across Tamil and Telugu cinema. His career-defining moment came in 1999 with director Bala’s romantic drama “Sethu”, for which he shaved his head, lost 21 kilograms, and grew his nails long — a transformative commitment that became his calling card. The character’s name “Chiyaan” became his permanent nickname among fans.

He followed “Sethu” with a string of commercial blockbusters including “Gemini” (2002), “Dhool” (2003), and “Saamy” (2003), establishing himself as a top-tier star. His portrayal of a volatile gangster in “Pithamagan” (2003) earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor, the Tamil Nadu State Film Award, and a Filmfare Award. He continued to push boundaries with physically demanding roles in “Anniyan” (2005), “Raavanan” (2010), and the courtroom drama “Deiva Thirumagal” (2011), where his portrayal of a man with developmental disability earned widespread praise.

In 2022, he starred in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s action blockbuster “Vikram”, which became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films. Over his career spanning more than three decades, Vikram has won nine Filmfare Awards South, a National Film Award, four Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu, cementing his legacy as one of Indian cinema’s most transformative actors.
