Biography

Vivek, born Vivekanandan on November 19, 1961, in Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu, was one of Tamil cinema’s most beloved comedians and actors. Known as “Chinna Kalaivanar” (The Little Entertainer), he appeared in over 200 films and was celebrated for his intelligent, socially relevant humour.

Vivek began his career as a mimicry artist and stage performer before entering films. He made his debut with “Manathil Uruthi Vendum” (1987) directed by K. Balachander. His breakthrough came with “Run” (2002), and he went on to deliver iconic comedy performances in “Saamy” (2003), “Sivaji” (2007), “Perazhagan” (2004), “Anniyan” (2005), and “Dasavathaaram” (2008). His comedy tracks often carried social messages, setting him apart from other comedians.

Vivek was a passionate environmental activist and planted millions of trees through his “Green Kalam” initiative, inspired by his close association with former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He received the Padma Shri in 2009 for his contributions to arts and environmental activism. He also won the Filmfare Award for Best Comedian and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Comedian multiple times.
