How to read these figures

  • Monthly, before tax. Every figure is the gross monthly salary — what the offer letter calls gross pay, not CTC. Multiply by 12 for the yearly figure; CTC adds the employer’s PF and gratuity, about 5–6% more.
  • Typical and range. “Typical” is what the middle person earns. The range covers most people at that level — the lower and upper quarters.
  • Chennai only. Pay in Chennai is close to Hyderabad and Pune, a little below Bengaluru for IT, and above most other Tamil Nadu cities.

Private-sector figures are estimates from public salary data and job postings, checked once or twice a year; your pay depends on the employer, your skills and the job. Government pay is worked out from the pay rules and changes with every DA revision.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average salary in Chennai?
Most salaried freshers in Chennai earn ₹20,000–₹50,000 a month: about ₹50,000 for a software engineer, ₹25,000 for an accountant, ₹23,000 for a staff nurse in a private hospital and ₹22,500 for a private school teacher. Central government jobs start higher with allowances — about ₹41,000 a month for a clerk. With 6–10 years of experience, pay is typically 1.5 to 3 times the starting salary.
How is the take-home salary worked out?
From the typical monthly salary: income tax under the new regime (no tax up to ₹12.75 lakh a year of salary), professional tax to the Greater Chennai Corporation, and PF at 12% of basic pay (taken as 40% of gross), with ESI on low wages. For government jobs, the 10% pension contribution (NPS/UPS) replaces PF.
How are government salaries worked out?
From the central government pay rules: the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, DA at 60% of basic pay (from January 2026), HRA at 30% for Chennai and the transport allowance, with a 3% increment every year and a move up a level after 10, 20 and 30 years.
Will government salaries go up with the 8th Pay Commission?
Yes, when it is implemented. The 8th Pay Commission was set up in 2025 and its pay is expected to apply from January 2026, with the new pay and arrears paid once the Government accepts its report. Until then these figures use the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix.
Where do the private salary figures come from?
From salary sites (AmbitionBox, Glassdoor, Naukri, Indeed, PayScale), Chennai job postings and news, collected for each job. Each job’s page lists its sources and the date they were checked.
Why is my salary different?
The figures are the typical (median) salary and the range for the middle half at each level. Product companies, large hospitals and top colleges pay more; small firms pay less; and skills, certifications and shift or travel allowances all move pay up or down.
