Chennai is set to get its first musical “supertree” tower at Kalaignar Centenary Park, with the 30-metre structure nearing completion and expected to be inaugurated in the coming weeks.

The eight-storey tower will include a café on the seventh floor and two viewing decks—a glass gallery and an open terrace—offering wide views of the city skyline, lights and the sea line. The tower is planned with two lifts, stair access with landing spaces, and nearly 3,000 sqft of indoor and outdoor viewing areas.

Modelled on Singapore’s Supertree Grove, the structure uses concrete and steel, with vertical greenery wrapping the stem and steel branches spreading about 24 metres. Thousand Lights MLA N Ezhilan said the tower will be covered with live plants, feature illuminated branches, and host a light-and-sound show.

Officials said the café will be inaugurated later as details are being finalised. The park, developed on land reclaimed by the state in 2023 from the Agri Horticultural Society and opened in 2024, currently attracts around 500 visitors a day.

Some residents, however, flagged parking as a concern, especially on weekends. A regular visitor said the lack of a parking plan or a cab drop-off driveway leads to congestion on Cathedral Road and could worsen after the tower opens.
