Chennai police arrested five people, including three women, for allegedly smuggling ganja into the city from Odisha. Officers seized 20kg of the contraband along with the container truck believed to have been used for transportation.
According to police, a team led by inspector Anandakumar tracked the movements of Geetha (45) of Korukkupet, who had earlier been booked in two ganja-related cases. Investigators monitored her digital footprint and found her in contact with a mobile number based in Odisha.
Police said that after Geetha spoke to the suspect in Odisha, the mobile number’s location shifted from the state, prompting teams to intensify surveillance. A trap was laid as officers followed Geetha, who travelled in an autorickshaw with three others.
When the group was about to receive the container, police intercepted the lorry driver, John (35) of Tuticorin. A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed 20kg of ganja concealed inside.
The arrested persons were identified as Geetha, John, Padma (42), Deepa (45) and Nitish Kumar (30). All five were remanded in judicial custody, police said.
