Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu may face a hotter summer, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heatwave spells between March and May. The seasonal outlook indicates above-normal maximum temperatures over most parts of the state.

IMD said heatwave days could range from three to nine days across much of coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai. In some adjoining northern districts, the number of heatwave days may extend to nine to 15 days. Minimum temperatures during the season are expected to remain largely near normal.

The agency defines a heatwave in plains when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C and is 4.5°C to 6.4°C above normal, or when the maximum touches 45°C or higher regardless of the departure from normal. In hilly regions, the threshold is 30°C.

May is typically the peak summer month in Chennai, with average maximum temperatures around 37.3°C. For March, IMD expects relatively moderate conditions, with daytime temperatures near normal across Chennai and districts up to the delta region, while some interior districts may see below-normal daytime temperatures.

IMD cautioned that a higher likelihood of heatwave conditions could affect public health, water resources, power demand and essential services, particularly for vulnerable groups. It advised people to stay hydrated, avoid peak heat hours and take special care of those at risk.
