Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran on Sunday criticised the DMK government, alleging it “instigated” or enabled protests on the day the Prime Minister visited Tamil Nadu.
In a statement, he said that when the Prime Minister was in the state, Islamic organisations along with the VCK attempted to lay siege to the US Deputy Consulate in Chennai and held a protest, citing an issue related to an Iran attack.
Nagendran questioned why the police, which he claimed had denied permission and acted harshly against peaceful protests by teachers, sanitation workers and nurses seeking fulfilment of DMK election promises, appeared to remain passive on this occasion.
He alleged there was a double standard in handling protests—one approach for ordinary citizens raising “legitimate demands” and another for DMK’s alliance partners. He further said this raised suspicion about whether the protest was allowed in a planned manner in the capital to cast a shadow on the Prime Minister’s security.
Stating that the DMK government may have lost the ability to control protests involving its allies, he said that regardless of the reason, the government’s approach on the day of the Prime Minister’s visit deserved strong condemnation.
