Villupuram: The verdict in the red sand quarry corruption case against former DMK minister K. Ponmudi will be delivered on April 2, the court has said.

The case relates to a red sand quarry at Poothurai village near Vanur in Villupuram district. Police allege that during the previous DMK regime, red sand was extracted in violation of rules, causing a loss of Rs 28.36 crore to the government.

The district crime branch registered the case in 2012 against Ponmudi, his son Gowtham Sigamani and six others. The trial has been under way at the Villupuram District Principal Court.

Prosecution witness examination continued until October. Of the 57 witnesses examined, 30 turned hostile.

With the witness examination completed, Judge Manimozhi announced that the judgment will be pronounced on April 2. With the Tamil Nadu Assembly election nearing, the verdict is expected to draw attention.
