Madurai: The BJP is pursuing a government job for Hindumathi, the wife of Poornachandran, and is also seeking admission for their two sons in a Kendriya Vidyalaya school in Madurai, party sources said.
Poornachandran, a medical sales representative from Madurai, died by self-immolation after protesting the Tamil Nadu government’s refusal to permit lighting a ceremonial lamp atop Thiruparankundram hill, despite an order from the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to a public meeting in Madurai, he met Hindumathi and their sons, Sivanesh and Iniyan, near the stage. The interaction lasted about three minutes, during which he spoke to the children in English about their studies and asked Hindumathi about her work, while offering condolences.
At the public meeting, the Prime Minister referred to the incident and expressed that it had caused pain, alleging it occurred due to the “dishonesty” of the DMK government. BJP sources said Hindumathi’s petition to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for a teaching job is under consideration, and the party is also showing interest in enrolling the children at the Narimedu Kendriya Vidyalaya in Madurai.
When Hindumathi attempted to submit a petition during the meeting with the Prime Minister, BJP representatives reportedly told her that the request was already under review and that a favourable response would come, advising her not to hand it directly to him.
