Thousands of devotees took part in a girivalam (circumambulation) at Tirupparankundram in Madurai district on the full moon day, urging that a lamp be lit at the Deepathoon pillar on the hilltop in line with a court directive.

The march was called by the Muruga Bhaktargal Peravai and several Hindu organisations, which appealed for large participation. Tirupparankundram traditionally sees heavy turnout for girivalam on full moon days.

BJP state president Nainar Nagendran joined the event along with party functionaries led by Arvind Menon and state secretary Kathali Narasinga Perumal. Leaders and cadres from Hindu Munnani, Hindu Tamilar Katchi, VHP, Akhil Bharath Anuman Sena and Hindu Rashtriya Sabha were also present.

The Muruga Bhaktargal Peravai participated separately and distributed rudraksha beads free of cost to devotees who joined the girivalam, stating that around one lakh people took part.
