Washington: US opposition Democrats have questioned President Donald Trump over why the United States launched strikes on Iran despite what they say was no imminent threat to the US.
The report said the attack came after talks linked to a nuclear agreement ended without success, with the US acting alongside Israel. It claimed key Iranian leaders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, were killed, and that the conflict has since spread to Gulf countries, heightening tensions across West Asia as it continues for a fifth day.
Trump has said the US began the offensive even as Iran was preparing to strike first, and that operations against Iran would continue for another week. The war is estimated to cost the US about 1.18 lakh crore.
After a second day of closed-door consultations with the administration, Senator Elizabeth Warren said the Trump administration had no plan in Iran and alleged the war was launched on falsehoods, adding that there was neither a clear reason to start it nor a plan to end it.
Senators Angus King and Richard Blumenthal also voiced concern, with King alleging the US had entered the war to satisfy Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Blumenthal warning the situation could push the US toward sending ground troops into Iran. A vote is scheduled in the US Senate on a war powers resolution that, if passed, would require congressional approval for future strikes.
