Israel has issued a sharp warning to Iran’s newly chosen supreme leader, saying any figure installed by what it called Iran’s “terror regime” would be treated as a target for elimination.
The statement came after reports said Iran selected Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new ruler and top cleric. The development follows claims that Ali Khamenei was killed in an attack by the United States and Israel.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz made the remarks in a post on social media. He said Iran could not continue issuing threats to destroy Israel, intimidate the United States, the wider world and countries in the region.
Katz added that Israel would continue acting “with full force” alongside its American allies, with the aim of creating conditions for Iranians to overthrow the current system and remove it from power.
