The United States has begun military action in Ecuador, targeting what it described as terrorist organisations and drug-trafficking groups. The operation is being carried out jointly with Ecuador’s forces, following orders from President Donald Trump, according to reports.
The development comes after a US-Israel attack on Iran in which Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed, the report said. US attention has now shifted to groups operating in Ecuador, it added.
Sources said Trump, in his second term, has taken a hard line against narcotics crossing borders, and that the current escalation is part of that approach.
In a statement, the US military said Ecuadorian and American forces have started operations against illegal activities in Ecuador. It said the two sides are acting together to confront terrorists who impose terrorism, violence and corruption on the public.
The statement also praised the courage and determination of Ecuadorians who have expressed support for the action.
