Iran has said it carried out a missile strike on a US oil tanker in the Gulf, after which the vessel reportedly caught fire in the middle of the sea.

Officials have not yet released information on the status of the crew or others who were on board at the time of the attack.

According to the report, the strike was described as retaliation for an earlier attack on an Iranian naval warship named ‘Dina’ while it was sailing in the Indian Ocean.

The report further said 87 people were killed in what it described as a US torpedo missile attack on the Iranian warship. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had earlier warned that the US would “have to regret” the act, and the tanker strike followed.
