SIVAGANGA: Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, speaking to reporters in Sivaganga, said minorities place their trust in the alliance led by the Congress and that the party has consistently supported Muslims. He also said there are rules for bank loan waivers and that state governments cannot waive loans taken from nationalised banks.
Karti further welcomed the idea of direct cash transfers in place of freebies. On the issue of narcotics, he said the spread of drugs is a nationwide problem and called for steps to stop distribution.
He added that police should take strict action and that awareness should be created through rehabilitation centres.
The latest controversy stems from a press meet held in Karaikudi two days earlier, where he was asked about an attack in Iran and a question related to the reported death of the country’s leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. During that interaction, Karti had made strongly critical remarks about Khamenei.
Following his comments, Muslim organisations condemned the statement. On Wednesday, members of a Muslim federation raised slogans against Karti and held a protest in the Sivaganga palace area.
