Chennai: Former BJP Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai has accused the DMK government of putting the state’s interests at risk following Karnataka’s latest announcement on the Mekedatu dam.

In a statement, Annamalai said the Congress government in Karnataka, in its budget, has indicated that it will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for constructing the Mekedatu dam across the Cauvery river, which he described as vital for Tamil Nadu farmers.

He alleged that the announcement came a day after the DMK reaffirmed its alliance with the Congress, and claimed this showed the DMK was “mortgaging” Tamil Nadu’s welfare to retain the Congress within the alliance.

Calling the DMK’s approach unacceptable, he said the Tamil Nadu government should not act in a manner that benefits the Karnataka Congress government without safeguarding Tamil Nadu’s rights.

Annamalai urged Chief Minister M K Stalin to immediately speak to his alliance partner, the Karnataka Chief Minister, and press for dropping the DPR preparation for the Mekedatu project.
