Patna witnessed fresh political churn after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar filed his nomination to contest for a Rajya Sabha seat. The move has intensified speculation over who could take over the state’s top post.
Nitish leads the NDA government in Bihar, with JD(U) and the BJP as key partners. Although the BJP emerged as the single largest party in the recent Assembly election, Nitish became chief minister as per the alliance’s power-sharing understanding.
Barely four months into the new term, Nitish’s decision to shift focus towards national politics has sparked anger within JD(U). Party workers, expressing shock and resentment, allegedly vandalised the party office in Patna, with visuals circulating widely on social media.
Within the NDA, several BJP leaders are being discussed as possible contenders for the chief minister’s post. Names doing the rounds include Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai, former state BJP president Dilip Jaiswal, and Patna MLA Sanjeev Chaurasia. The report notes that the final call is expected to be taken by the BJP’s central leadership.
Amid the developments, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh said a warning he had issued during the Bihar election had now come true, according to the report.
