Shah’s remarks in Dehradun
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday said the NDA would form governments in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal in 2026. He made the statement while addressing an event in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
Citizenship granted to about 200 people
Shah said around 200 people from Pakistan and Afghanistan were granted Indian citizenship in Uttarakhand. He linked the move to the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Criticism of opposition parties over CAA
Referring to opposition to the CAA, Shah said parties including the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the DMK had opposed the law. He argued that Hindu refugees from Pakistan and Afghanistan had a right to citizenship and said it had been denied earlier due to “appeasement politics”.
Other political and legal claims
Shah said that despite opposition criticism, citizenship would be granted under the CAA. He also claimed the BJP would return to power in Uttarakhand for a third term in 2027, and said new criminal laws aim to prioritise justice over punishment while replacing what he described as oppressive British-era laws.
