Final showdown in Ahmedabad
The T20 World Cup has reached its climax, with defending champions India set to take on New Zealand in the final on Sunday in Ahmedabad. A win would see India lift the trophy for a second consecutive time.
India’s strength: fearless batting and pace
India, ranked No.1 in international T20s, come in with a powerful batting unit. Sanju Samson has been in strong touch with scores of 97 and 89 in his last two matches, while captain Suryakumar Yadav (242 runs in eight matches) and Tilak Varma (199) form the core of the middle order. Hardik Pandya (199) and Shivam Dube (209) add late-innings firepower.
Bowling choices under focus
In the attack, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh have led the pace unit, with Bumrah expected to be key again after his semi-final impact against England. Spin remains a talking point, with Varun Chakravarthy conceding runs; India could consider alternatives such as Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj or Washington Sundar. All-rounder Axar Patel is seen as a major asset.
New Zealand’s all-round depth and key threats
New Zealand, ranked fourth in T20s, rely on a squad packed with all-rounders. In the semi-final against South Africa, Allen struck a 100 off 33 balls, while Tim Seifert has provided rapid starts. The batting also features Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Chapman, Daryl Mitchell and captain Mitchell Santner, with pace options including Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry, alongside all-rounder Jimmy Neesham.
Captains speak ahead of the final
Santner said New Zealand have discussed handling Bumrah and believe Ahmedabad could be a high-scoring venue, adding that their aim is to restrict India to 220 and win the title. Suryakumar said India are well-prepared for the final, backed Varun as the No.1 T20 bowler, and noted that Samson’s inclusion has made a significant difference while giving players freedom to play bravely under pressure.
