Tamil Nadu has introduced a new ‘Beach Wedding’ scheme aimed at helping middle-class families host grand wedding functions on the seashore, officials said.

In metro cities such as Chennai, weddings are often held at luxury halls and star hotels, while prominent personalities and big industrialists typically choose beachside resorts. Such venues usually involve expenses running into lakhs, keeping beach weddings out of reach for many families.

To address this, the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has launched the ‘Beach Wedding’ plan, enabling couples to conduct weddings on the beach with permission through TTDC’s office on Chennai’s East Coast Road (ECR).

Tourism department officials said public interest in overseas-style ceremonies has been rising and many people have been looking for beach weddings beyond regular tourism offerings. While similar arrangements have existed through private operators, the government-backed scheme is expected to make it available at a lower cost.

In the first phase, the plan will be implemented at the Tamil Nadu Hotel resort in Mamallapuram on ECR, where weddings can be held on the beach sand area. Booking and further details are available at www.ttdconline.com.
