Chennai: Six candidates from Tamil Nadu have been elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha, the election returning officer announced on Monday.

The Election Commission had scheduled polling for March 16 to fill six vacant Rajya Sabha seats from the state. Based on the strength of MLAs, DMK was set to secure four seats and AIADMK two.

In the DMK-led alliance, one seat each was allotted to DMDK and the Congress. Nominations were filed by Tiruchi Siva and Constantine Ravindhran (DMK), Sudheesh (DMDK), and Christopher Tilak (Congress). From the AIADMK side, Thambidurai filed papers, while Anbumani filed on behalf of PMK, an ally.

After scrutiny, their nominations were accepted and other nominations were rejected. With the withdrawal window open until 3 pm on Monday and no additional contenders left, all six were declared elected unopposed.

Following the declaration, Thambidurai and Anbumani received their election certificates from returning officer Shanti.
