Tamil Nadu’s six vacant Rajya Sabha seats are set to be filled without a contest, as only six candidates remain in the fray after scrutiny of nominations.
The Election Commission had earlier announced that polling for these seats would be held on March 16. Based on the strength of MLAs, the allocation is expected to be four seats for the DMK and two for the AIADMK.
In the DMK-led alliance, one seat each has been earmarked for the DMDK and the Congress. Nominations were filed by Tiruchi Siva and Constantine Ravindran (DMK), Sudheesh (DMDK) and Christopher Tilak (Congress).
On the AIADMK side, Thambidurai filed papers, while Anbumani filed on behalf of the PMK, an ally. Their nominations were accepted and other nominations were rejected.
The deadline to withdraw nominations is 3 pm today. With no additional candidates beyond the six, the winners are expected to be declared unopposed this evening.
