Chennai: Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) chief coordinator Seeman questioned the rationale behind welfare “freebies”, arguing that people already have money to spend on entertainment and liquor.
In an interview, he said the ruling DMK appeared “more fearful” after expanding its alliance compared to the previous election. He asked why a party claiming good governance would need alliances, and criticised election-time promises such as cash support to homemakers.
Seeman also took aim at actor Vijay’s political entry, calling him an extension of Dravidian parties and saying he lacked a distinct ideology or path. He cautioned against mixing cinema with political ideology.
Pointing to what he described as large public spending, Seeman said people spend over Rs 760 crore on alcohol in a single day, and that a Vijay film can collect Rs 34 crore from first-day first shows. He argued that instead of freebies, governments should focus on raising living standards by improving knowledge, physical capacity and productivity through work.
