Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Centre’s decision to rename Kerala as “Keralam” marks a joyful moment for Malayali brothers and sisters. He made the remarks while addressing an event in Kochi.
Modi said the change reflected the people’s wish and that the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government had fulfilled it. He added that the state had now received what he called the “right name” for the place, and congratulated those involved in the effort.
The Prime Minister also praised the fishing community for its role during Kerala’s floods, saying their courage and willingness to risk their lives to save others was witnessed by the world. He said the fishermen’s bravery and dedication stand out whenever the country faces challenges.
Highlighting government initiatives, Modi said a National Fisheries Digital Platform has been launched to allow fishermen, traders and exporters to register on a single online portal, making it easier to access benefits of government schemes. He alleged that the fishing community had been neglected for years under previous administrations.
Modi said the NDA government created a separate ministry for fisheries and allocated Rs 1,400 crore to Kerala under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, adding that the sector is progressing rapidly.
