US Central Command said it has destroyed 16 Iranian boats that were allegedly involved in laying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping corridor.

The development comes as the war involving Iran continues, with crude oil movement through the Strait reported to be disrupted. The situation has contributed to higher crude prices and raised concerns of a possible shortage of gas cylinders.

US Central Command also released a video showing strikes on boats described as mine-laying vessels in the Strait. The US said the action took place in a route that accounts for around 20% of the world’s oil trade.

In a warning to Iran, President Donald Trump said any mines placed in the Strait should be removed immediately. He said failure to do so would invite a severe military response, and added that the US would use missile and technology capabilities similar to those used against drug traffickers to permanently destroy any boat or ship attempting to lay mines.
