A special inter-ministerial group set up by the Union government to monitor the West Asia conflict has urged citizens not to panic over cooking gas cylinder supply. Officials said LPG and petroleum products are continuing to reach India without disruption.
The panel said supplies are coming through multiple shipping routes and not solely via the Strait of Hormuz. It added that crude oil inflows are currently higher than usual, with a larger share being routed through alternative corridors after the escalation in the region.
Petroleum Ministry Joint Secretary Sujata Sharma said two LNG cargo vessels are currently headed to India. She also said household LPG cylinder waiting time remains around two-and-a-half days, and consumers need not rush to book refills.
According to the officials, domestic refineries have raised output to above 100% of normal levels. India’s daily gas consumption was cited at 189 million metric standard cubic metres, with 97.5 million produced domestically and the remaining requirement met through imports.
The government said a temporary disruption affected 47.4 million metric standard cubic metres of gas supply, but alternative procurement has already begun. Separately, in a meeting chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan with state and UT chief secretaries, states were asked to act against hoarding and black-market sales and to appoint spokespersons to issue regular public updates on supply.
