New Delhi: MPs from the opposition INDIA bloc have signed a motion notice seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The bloc, which includes parties such as the Congress, DMK and Samajwadi Party, alleged that the CEC has acted in favour of the BJP-led Union government. It also claimed that under the banner of a “special intensive revision” of electoral rolls, many eligible voters were removed in states governed by opposition parties.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress also backed the demand for the CEC’s removal.

According to the report, 120 MPs have signed the notice in the Lok Sabha and 60 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. The INDIA bloc has decided to submit the notices in both Houses soon.

The report said this would be the first time in India’s history that a removal notice has been moved against a Chief Election Commissioner. It added that with the BJP-led NDA holding a majority in both Houses, the motion is expected to be defeated.
