Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah narrowly escaped unhurt after a firing incident at a wedding event in Jammu on Wednesday night.
According to reports, Abdullah and Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary attended a wedding at the residence of a party functionary in the Greater Kailash area. The incident occurred as they were returning with party workers, when a man opened fire towards the crowd.
While Abdullah was not injured, Deputy CM Choudhary suffered minor injuries in the attack. Police said the suspected shooter was found hiding in a vehicle and was surrounded and arrested at the spot.
During questioning, the accused was identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal, a local resident. Police seized the firearm and said he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
The firing has heightened concern amid an already sensitive law-and-order situation in the Kashmir Valley, where protests were reported following news of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, prompting increased security and restrictions.
