TVK leader and actor Vijay has questioned the state of safety for women and girl children in Tamil Nadu, accusing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of focusing on protecting his political alliance rather than public security.
In a statement, Vijay referred to the reported rape and murder of a 17-year-old girl in Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district, saying the incident had shocked the public and triggered protests by the victim’s family and local residents.
He also cited a case near Madurantakam where a 14-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and later reached a police station after walking about 10 km the next morning. Vijay said such incidents leave victims with trauma that is difficult to overcome.
Listing other recent incidents, he mentioned crimes against children, attacks in places including Nanguneri, Sivaganga and Manamadurai, an alleged custodial death in Manamadurai, and an assault by a DMK functionary on a young woman in Chennai’s Kasimedu. He also referred to a double murder in Chennai’s Trisulam, a food safety incident in a Coimbatore government school where 43 students were hospitalised after consuming food in which a lizard had fallen, and a petrol-bomb attack on the office linked to Congress leaders P. Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram.
Vijay alleged that the spate of incidents in a short period reflects a broader breakdown of law and order, claiming there is no safety for the public—especially women, children, the elderly and youth. He asked why the Chief Minister remained silent and said people were beginning to question whether such a government is needed.
