Opposition MPs have submitted notices in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha seeking a motion for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

Parties in the INDIA bloc, including the Congress, DMK and Samajwadi Party, alleged that the CEC acted in favour of the ruling BJP. They also claimed that many eligible voters were removed in opposition-ruled states under the guise of a “special intensive revision” of electoral rolls. The Trinamool Congress, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, also backed the demand for his removal.

According to a PTI report cited in the source, the notices carry signatures of 130 Lok Sabha MPs and 63 Rajya Sabha MPs. It said MPs from all INDIA bloc parties signed, along with MPs from the Aam Aadmi Party, which has exited the alliance, and some Independent MPs.

The notice lists seven allegations against the CEC, including bias and discrimination in office, deliberately blocking probes into alleged election malpractice, and “vote theft”. The report also noted this is the first time in India’s history that a notice seeking the removal of a Chief Election Commissioner has been submitted.

With the BJP-led NDA holding a majority in both Houses, the motion is expected to be defeated, the report added.
