UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that the escalating crisis in the Middle East poses a serious threat to international peace and security.

In a statement, Guterres said the situation has caused severe suffering for civilians and stressed that reducing tensions through dialogue is the only viable path forward.

He urged all parties to halt hostile actions, uphold international law, protect civilians and begin negotiations without delay.

The warning comes as the UN Security Council has already adopted a resolution calling on Iran to stop attacks on West Asian countries. The resolution also urged Iran to immediately end all attacks and threats, and remove obstructions in the Strait of Hormuz.
