New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Petroleum has cautioned petrol pumps across the country against dispensing petrol in unsafe containers such as plastic water cans, warning that violations will invite strict action.
In a statement, the ministry said adequate stocks of petrol and diesel are available at petrol pumps nationwide. It noted that an incident at a retail outlet in Tamil Nadu, where petrol was reportedly supplied in a plastic water can, had come to its attention.
The ministry advised the public not to buy or store petrol or any other fuel in loose or unsuitable containers, citing the risk of serious consequences.
Following the reported violation, the concerned petrol pump’s licence has been temporarily suspended and appropriate action has been initiated. The ministry also directed all petrol pumps and dealers to strictly follow safety procedures while dispensing fuel.
It reiterated that any breach of safety norms would be dealt with firmly.
