The Madras High Court has granted conditional permission for the Hindu Makkal Katchi–Tamilagam to hold its conference titled “Tamil, Tamilar, Tamilagam Urimai Meedpu” in Chennai on March 15. The event is scheduled at the YMCA grounds in Royapettah.

Party founder Arjun Sampath said the Chennai City Police had denied separate permissions sought for a conference, public meeting, rally and an indoor programme. Following a petition, the court heard arguments from both sides and allowed the conference to be held as an indoor event, while directing that no rally be conducted.

According to the party, it had sought permission for a rally along a route commonly used by political parties, but police objected citing possible traffic congestion. The party also said permission was refused for the Royapettah venue citing Metro rail works nearby, the presence of a hospital and traffic concerns.

Arjun Sampath alleged that other organisations had held events at the same venue and that denying permission only to his party was unfair. He said the conference aims to stress Hindu unity and voter participation, and added that the programme will run from 6 am to 8 pm, including a “Tamilarangam” session with 1,000 Tamil scholars and participation by Hindu religious leaders, including heads of mutts and adheenams.
