US President Donald Trump has said he cannot predict how long the war will continue. Responding to a question from reporters, Trump said he was unable to give a timeline and questioned the value of knowing it.
Speaking to the media, he said the US aimed to end what he described as nuclear threats in the Middle East and globally, and claimed the country was now in an “unprecedented” position of dominance. He also asserted that Iran’s naval and air capabilities had been destroyed, along with much of its military, and that it no longer had radar capability.
Trump said the US carried out what he called very severe and powerful attacks, adding that American and Israeli objectives in the conflict with Iran could differ slightly. He also said he had strengthened the US military during his first term.
On a question about when the US Navy would begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump replied that it would happen soon. In a separate statement, he claimed the US conducted one of the most powerful bombing operations in Middle East history on Iran’s Kharg Island, saying military targets there were destroyed.
He warned that if Iran or anyone else interfered with ships moving freely and safely through the Strait of Hormuz, he would immediately reconsider his decision. Trump also reiterated that Iran would never have nuclear weapons and said Iran and others involved should lay down arms to protect what remains of the country.
