Supreme Court Justice M.M. Sundaresh on Saturday cautioned that the rapid spread of artificial intelligence could eventually make human effort seem less valuable. He said machines have been taught to think and respond, and if this trend continues, the impact could be felt widely.

He was speaking at the launch of “Life, Law and Literature – Reflections of a Judge”, a book written in English and Tamil by Madras High Court Justice N. Anand Venkatesh. The event was organised by the Indian Advocates Association and New Century Book House at the Bar Council auditorium in Chennai.

Justice Sundaresh said enduring works such as the Kamba Ramayanam will remain as long as language survives, and added that books should leave a positive influence on readers. He expressed hope that the new book would have a constructive impact on young law students.

Referring to AI’s growing footprint, he noted that the technology has spread across fields including medicine, science, engineering, law and education. He said AI’s dominance could accelerate over the next five to ten years.

Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, speaking at the event, said he felt both joy and emotion, comparing the moment to a mother giving birth. He added that he had mostly been a recipient so far, and wished for his book to reach readers’ hands.
