A newly inaugurated bus stand at Nariyampalayam near Pattukkottai in Thanjavur district witnessed a roof-related mishap even before it was put to regular use, after cement plaster from the interior canopy reportedly peeled off and fell on Saturday afternoon.
The facility, built by the municipality at an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore, was inaugurated on February 15 by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi. However, allegations have been raised that the stand was opened in haste while key works remained incomplete.
According to the report, even a month after the inauguration, adequate road access to the bus stand had not been provided and construction activities were still pending.
Municipal officials visited the spot and inspected the area following the incident.
Social activists alleged that cracks are visible at several places despite the stand not yet becoming fully operational, and demanded that the district collector conduct a comprehensive quality inspection and order an inquiry into the contractor and municipal officials.
