World Consumer Rights Day is being observed today (March 15) to highlight consumer protection, strengthen consumer rights and build public awareness. The day has been marked annually on March 15 since 1983.

The International Consumer organisation was formed in 1960 and has members from 120 countries. In 1962, US President John F. Kennedy was among the first to stress the importance of consumers.

This year’s theme is “Safe products, trusted consumers.” The focus is on ensuring that buyers can make informed choices about the quality, price and safety of the products they purchase.

In India, National Consumer Rights Day is observed on December 24. Globally, consumer movements use the day to raise awareness against market malpractices and to reinforce consumer rights.
