The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has decided to revise toll charges at 66 of the 77 toll plazas in Tamil Nadu from April 1. The remaining toll plazas are expected to see a fee revision in September.
Officials said the toll revision for this year is likely to be in the range of 5% to 7%.
FASTag, the electronic toll collection system, was introduced in 2016 and made mandatory from 2021 to enable digital payments at national highway toll plazas. The Union government had also introduced an annual pass option for frequent users of private vehicles such as cars and jeeps.
According to central government data, around 11.86 crore FASTags have been issued so far, with about 5.9 crore currently active. Nearly 98% of toll collections at national highway plazas are now made through FASTag.
From April 1, toll charges at the 66 plazas in Tamil Nadu are expected to increase by about Rs 10 to Rs 40 for cars, jeeps and vans, and by about Rs 50 to Rs 200 for heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses. Monthly pass charges are also set to go up by around Rs 300 to Rs 350, while the FASTag annual fee nationwide will rise from Rs 3,000 to Rs 3,075.
