Washington: US President Donald Trump has warned that American attacks on Iran’s Kharg Island—described as Iran’s main oil-export hub—could be intensified. He also made a sarcastic remark suggesting strikes could be carried out even “for entertainment.”
Kharg Island lies about 25 km off Iran’s coast and is said to handle around 90% of the country’s crude oil exports. The report notes that the island also functions as a major military base, with naval facilities, missile storage sites and air-defence systems.
Because of its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments, Iran is said to use Kharg Island as a monitoring point as well.
Trump had earlier confirmed that the US struck Kharg Island on March 13, claiming more than 90 military targets were hit, including naval mine storage centres, missile bunkers and military airfields. He also said oil infrastructure was deliberately not targeted on humanitarian grounds.
In his latest comments, Trump urged allied nations to deploy warships to protect the Strait of Hormuz, while adding that much of Kharg Island had been destroyed and that further escalation was possible. He said Iran may be ready to end the confrontation, but that conditions had not yet been finalised.
