AIADMK has approached the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer, alleging violations of election rules over the distribution of mobile phones from district collector offices after the Model Code of Conduct came into effect.

Speaking to reporters after submitting a petition, AIADMK Advocates Wing secretary Inbathurai said welfare assistance should not be distributed once the code is in force. He claimed that 2,063 mobile phones were to be issued to anganwadi workers from the Salem collectorate.

When questioned, the Salem Collector reportedly said he was unaware of the proposed distribution. Following this, the rooms where the phones were stored were locked and sealed, he said.

Inbathurai further alleged that similar distributions took place in Tiruppur, Karur and Erode the day before, and demanded that the Election Commission clarify who distributed the phones and to whom.

He also said a case had been filed from the DMK legal side seeking corruption cases against former AIADMK ministers, and alleged it was an attempt to tarnish the party during the election period.
