Ayurveda doctors say one of the main reasons many people struggle to sleep at night is prolonged use of screens such as computers, televisions and mobile phones.
To improve sleep, they suggest applying oil to the body once a week and spending about 30 minutes in sunlight. They also recommend a traditional “banana-leaf bath” to help the body get vitamin D and support better sleep.
As described, a person should drink a tumbler of water, wear light clothing, wet the body and lie on banana leaves on the terrace. Two banana leaves can be tied around the body, and the person should remain in the sun for up to an hour.
Doctors say the cooling nature of banana leaves can make the heat less noticeable, and following this routine may lead to deep sleep that night. They also advise bathing twice daily in cool water and ensuring adequate salt in food, including adding salt to buttermilk and lemon drinks.
