New Delhi: The Centre has announced fresh norms aimed at reducing add-on charges faced by air travellers during ticket booking and check-in.

Under the new directions issued through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), airlines will not be allowed to levy a separate fee for selecting seats for 60% of the seats on a flight. The move targets charges often collected for preferred options such as window or front-row seats.

The guidelines also state that passengers should not be made to pay any additional fee at the time of booking an air ticket. Further, travellers booked under the same reference number must be allotted adjacent seats.

In addition, airlines have been asked to provide flight-related information to passengers in their mother tongue. The DGCA said the measures are intended to make air travel more accessible, transparent and fairly priced for flyers.
