Chennai: The DMK-led alliance has allotted five Assembly constituencies to the Communist Party of India (CPI), following prolonged seat-sharing talks among alliance partners.
According to the agreement signed on Tuesday, the CPI’s allocation has been reduced by one seat compared with the 2021 Assembly election, when it was given six constituencies.
The seat-sharing negotiations within the alliance had seen delays, with parties seeking higher allocations. Earlier, the DMK finalised allocations for other partners, including 28 seats and one Rajya Sabha seat for the Congress, two seats each for the Indian Union Muslim League and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, four seats for the MDMK, and two seats for the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi.
In 2021, the CPI contested six seats and lost in four constituencies to the AIADMK-led alliance. The latest pact reduces its share ahead of the upcoming election.
Compared with 2021, the alliance allocations mentioned are: Congress 28 (+3), IUML 2 (-1), MMK 2 (no change), MDMK 4 (-2), KMDK 2 (-1), and CPI 5 (-1).
