The Lok Sabha on Monday revoked the suspension of eight MPs who had been barred for disorderly conduct during the first sitting of Parliament’s Budget Session. The MPs belong to the Congress and the CPI(M).
Several MPs from different parties had been urging the Speaker to withdraw the action. Speaker Om Birla had earlier indicated that the matter would be considered.
Ahead of the revocation, the Speaker held discussions with the suspended MPs and instructed them not to enter the well of the House or throw papers towards the Speaker’s chair. The opposition MPs agreed to these directions.
After Question Hour, during Zero Hour, senior Congress MP Kodikunnil Suresh said some members regretted mistakes made “unknowingly” and requested that the suspension be withdrawn. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju then moved a motion under Lok Sabha Rule 370 to revoke the suspension, which was adopted by voice vote.
During the proceedings, the Speaker reiterated that displaying posters, banners and photographs inside the House is strictly prohibited, and cautioned that AI-generated images should not be displayed in the House or within the Parliament परिसर. The revocation restored membership rights of Congress MPs Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole, Dean Kuriakose and CPI(M) MP Venkatesan.
