Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the Rajya Sabha while paying tribute to members whose terms are ending, saying there is “no full stop” in politics and that public life can continue beyond a formal tenure.
He said every MP plays a distinct role in debates on a range of issues, and added that the experience of retiring members would keep guiding public life. Modi cited senior leaders such as H D Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sharad Pawar, noting that they have devoted much of their lives to parliamentary service.
Calling dedication and a sense of social responsibility key traits of senior MPs, the Prime Minister said their contributions deserve appreciation. He also praised Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh for conducting proceedings calmly and without bias.
Modi described Harivansh as both a capable writer and a hard worker, saying he has travelled widely and carried out his duties with perseverance. The Prime Minister urged new MPs to protect the dignity of Parliament, draw inspiration from experienced members, and strengthen democratic traditions.
He also recalled that the House was once known for lively humour and satire, but said such moments have become fewer in recent times.
