North Korea’s state media has reported that the ruling bloc led by Kim Jong Un secured 99.93% of the votes in the country’s parliamentary election held on March 15.
The report comes amid long-standing criticism that elections in the country are largely symbolic. The system is widely described as tightly controlled, with strict restrictions and limited information reaching the outside world.
According to the account, candidates are typically selected by the ruling Workers’ Party, and voting is conducted without opposition parties. In many constituencies, only a single candidate is presented, making the process widely viewed internationally as undemocratic.
State media also highlighted that Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister, was among those elected. She reportedly won from the Kalimgil constituency.
